The Charles E. Mitchell house has been completely restored! Located in New Britain’s historical district, this Queen Anne Victorian features granite kit with island, ss appl, hardwood floors,3 FP’s, coffered ceilings, pocket doors, exquisite moldings and trim! 15 Hillside place was the home of attorney Charles E. Mitchell, who wrote the charter of New Britain. In 1889, when he was living in this Queen Anne style house, Mitchell was appointed the first united states patent attorney in Washington D.C. by President Benjamin Harrison. While serving as a state senator during the 1870s, Mitchell sponsored the bill that funded three-quarters of the cost of construction of the normal school located to the left of 15 hillside place, which in the 1880s was the original campus of Central Connecticut State College and is now the Hillside Place Condominium Complex. Mitchell’s lovely wood frame house, originally with symmetrical porches, exemplifies the wood-workmanship of the Queen Anne style of the 1870-80s. The Mitchell home features a central pavilion containing front doors; pointed central gables that break the roof line, balanced facades, and paired porches.
