In 1865 Union Troops raided Monticola, but left it undamaged. In 1887 Emil Otto Nolting purchased the estate and made some changes to the home. The house remained in the Nolting family into the 20th century. It changed hands several times after that. It was recently restored by Countryside Homecrafters. There are six outbuildings, including the original smokehouse. There is a 810 square foot guest cottage. This is a gated property. Circa 1852:
Monticola is a fully restored pre-Civil War Greek Revival plantation on 292 acres high above the James River in Howardsville, Virginia. Located in the beautiful county Of Albemarle, Monticola, was built in the 1850s for Daniel James Hartsook, a merchant, banker and planter. In 1865, Union troops raided Howardsville and Monticola, but left the mansion undamaged. In 1887, Emil Otto Nolting purchased the estate. Nolting modified the portico and added a semicircular porch at the rear of the house. Monticola remained in the Nolting family into the twentieth century. The estate changed hands several times since then. The home has since been lovingly restored by Countryside HomeCrafters and is now on the market for $4,991,808.
Entering the home via the beautiful portico, you will find yourself facing the original staircase with a simple, yet stunning wooden banister and heart pine flooring.
