Every once in awhile I check to see what the most expensive old house listings are by state. I check between the dates of 1700-1940. Connecticut’s most expensive has changed, and it’s only $45,000,000. I immediately wondered who owned it. It was Donald and Ivana Trump’s first mansion. It was built in 1939 for Robert Hillas, president of New York City’s Super Heater Company. Back then it even had a bowling alley and cost $200,000 to build.
Donald and Ivana bought it for $4,000,000 in 1982. In 1998 financier Robert Steinberg and his wife Suzanne paid $15,000,000 for it. The Steinberg’s added an indoor lap pool, sauna, tennis courts, and a 4,000 square foot guest suite. There are three fully equipped staff apartments. There is a home theater, an outdoor pool, and a putting green.
The main house is 19,773 square feet. $45,000,000
