Oh wow!!! Grand Oaks, Circa 1843! Two guest houses! 11 acres in Virginia. $599,000

April 20, 2018

Wow! The mansion was built in 1843 in Halifax, Virginia! It has two guest houses, a pool house, and a stable. Built for William Holt and his wife Phoebe. In 1917 it was bought by the Vaughn family. Mrs. Vaughn didn’t enjoy living at her husband’s hunting lodge, Falkland, so he bought her this. Ironically, Falkland was for sale about a year ago and I featured it. It was amazing in its own right! Grand Oaks is located on over 11 acres. Seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and 6,146 square feet. $599,000

From the Zillow listing:

In addition to the mansion house & approximately 11acres, this property also includes 2 guest houses currently in use plus a stable & a pool house now being used for storage. The mansion house is livable but in need of general restoration. The National Register of Historical places says Grand Oaks was constructed circa 1843 for William Holt & his wife Phoebe by Dabney Cosby, Jr. In 1917 it was bought by Hannah Vaughn, wife or Colonel Ira Vaughn who was overseeing the construction of the dam & power plant on the Banister River. Mrs. Vaughn did not enjoy living on Falkland Plantation, her husband’s hunting lodge, & wanted an in town house for entertaining. The original house, a two-story Greek Revival was brick laid in Flemish bond, with exterior chimneys at its gable ends. There was one room on each side of a central hall with the same arrangement on the second floor. Today the house has wings on each side & the roofline in front was extended for a 2 story portico supported by Tuscan columns w. a Colonial Revival facade. The original stairway w. hand-carved elements still has a commanding presence & the entry door & window surrounds retain their original Greek Revival lintels.
