Built in the 1700s, the town records refer to this as the “Judge Benjamin Coit House.” Benjamin Coit was a Justice for the New London County Court in the late 1700’s. In the mid 1850’s it was sold to the Town of Griswold and was used as the Town Farm or Alms House for approximately 100 years. During that time, it housed it’s former owners Henry & Pricilla Bennett as well as up to 11 pauper farmers. The row of small windows, under the eaves on the second floor, are typical of many almshouses, each indicating a single room, generally around 8 by 10 feet, which housed the residents. Fixtures for 2 full bathrooms (including claw foot tubs and antique sinks) supplied but not installed, plumbing and heating need to be completed. Town historian and public records supplied historic data but should be confirmed by buyers. Please do your diligence on any use other than single family dwelling before submitting any offer.
