This unusual early Greek Revival house with Victorian embellishment is located in the heart of charming Milton. Its different eras of additions and remodellings evoke Milton’s heyday. The front rooms and second floor showcase typical Greek Revival moldings, mantels and doors. A curious, yet impressive mantel now on the second floor, exhibits high-style Federal ornament including dentil molding, gougework, and reeded pilasters. Later 19th century and early 20th century additions showcase lovely mantels and features and provide ample comfortable spaces for a variety of residential uses. The front entrance of the Jones House conists of a welcoming central double door each with four molded panels. The trabeated entrance consists of sidelites and a transom overhead surrounded by a molded architrave.
The obvious highlights of the Jones House are the enormous multi-lite (12 over12 sash) windows on the front façade and the elaborate Victorian exterior woodwork along the eaves of the cornice and porch. The details on the sawnwork are numerous including a fleur-de-lis friezeboard, triple-laminated brackets, carved foliated lines within paired porch corner brackets, and spoolwork. Sadly, the elaborately carved cross-gable bargeboard is missing, however, archival photos are available. This unique detail is thought to be very similar to the Victorian ornament on several of the nearby commercial buildings and may be the work of the same carpenter.
Surrounded by restored buildings and just steps away from the Thomas Day Museum and old Milton State Bank, which is now the town’s visitor’s center, the Jones House is ready to be restored. Some initial demo and stabilization has been done and historic brick walkways uncovered. The house will require a complete rehabilitation including some structural repair caused by a roof leak and a/c window unit leak, new HVAC, kitchen and bathrooms. The house is included in the Milton National Register Historic District and is eligible for tax credits.

The Jones House is located on the main street of Milton, NC, a charming village (est. 1796) near the Virginia line that flourished in the early 19th century as a center for Dan River planters, tobacco warehouses, industry and artisans such as famed cabinetmaker Thomas Day. Nearby is Union Tavern (c.1818), Thomas Day’s residence and cabinet workshop from 1848 to 1859 and now open as a museum, Presbyterian Church (1837), the Milton State Bank (1859), and Milton’s commercial block (c.1880).
